Handling a Condo Flood Crisis in Clearwater Beach, FL

Handling a Condo Flood Crisis in Clearwater Beach, FL

Barbara Nagy • June 25, 2024
At Chris' Carpet Service & Water Restoration, we recently handled a condo building challenge with flood damage mitigation in Clearwater Beach, Florida. This six-floor condo building was seriously flooded due to a burst pipe on the top floor. Our team was called in to manage the situation and mitigate the damage.

How We Tackled This Condo Building Flood

Our team of professionals is equipped and always ready to tackle any size job with care and precision. Here are the detailed steps we took to tackle this flooded chaos:

Step 1: Initial Assessment and Planning

As soon as we received the call, our team quickly headed to the site. When we arrived, we thoroughly assessed the area to understand the extent of the damage. Water had traveled from the top floor down to the lower floors, affecting all six levels. Our primary goal was to stop the source of the water, extract the standing water, and prevent any further damage.

Step 2: Water Extraction

Our first step was to stop the water flow. We shut off the main water supply and then started the extraction process. We used industrial-grade water extractors and pumps to remove large volumes of water from the affected areas. For smaller, hard-to-reach places, we used portable extraction units. This step was important in minimizing damage and preventing mold growth.

Step 3: Drying and Dehumidification

Once the standing water was removed, we started the drying process. We strategically placed high-speed air movers and dehumidifiers throughout the building to speed up the drying process. We also used moisture meters and thermal cameras to monitor the progress and ensure all hidden moisture pockets were tackled.

Step 4: Cleaning and Sanitizing

After the area was thoroughly dried, we moved on to cleaning and sanitizing. Floodwater can carry contaminants, so this step was essential. We used specialized cleaning solutions to disinfect all affected areas, including walls, floors, and any salvageable furniture. We also deodorized the space to eliminate any lingering odors.

Step 5: Mold Prevention and Final Checks

Our final step in the mitigation process was to ensure the prevention of mold growth and other potential issues. We applied antimicrobial treatments to all affected areas to stop mold and mildew. Besides that, we thoroughly inspected using moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to confirm that the building was completely dry and free from any hidden moisture that could cause problems later on.
